"Well......," it's also the 30th anniversary of the election of The Gipper, Ronald Reagan, as President in November of 1980. Third Mind Books has gathered the Ronald Reagan Collection of vintage magazines, newspapers & posters: * The November 5, 1980 edition of The New York Times, announcing Reagan's election as President with the bold headline "REAGAN EASILY BEATS CARTER;...." & a photo of Ronald & Nancy Reagan beaming & waving on the front page; along with articles & editorials on the very morning after the election. Complete loose-folded four-section newspaper, in fine condition with inevitable yellowing to low quality newspaper stock, small tears at edges, vertical folded crease at lower left bottom of front page. Further deterioration of this & other fragile items in the Collection can probably be prevented or greatly slowed with conservation measures. * The November 17, 1980 issue of Newsweek magazine, with the heading "President Reagan" above a color photo of the President-elect on the front cover, & full of articles, analysis & commentary in the immediate wake of the election. Stapled periodical in vey fine condition, with very minor creases at staples, some smudging of blue background color near right edge of front cover, not effecting image of Reagan's smiling face. Glossy high quality paper with very mild yellowing to edges, print & images very crisp throughout. * The January 20, 1981 "HOSTAGE EXTRA" evening edition of the New York Post with a gigantic red "THEY'RE FREE!" headline taking up most of the front page, & fresh coverage of this historic event (the return of the hostages held by Iran for 444 days during 1979-81) & of Reagan's Inauguration as President, which overlapped. Complete loose-folded newspaper, in very fine condition with flat leaves, hardly any tears, yellowing to low quality newspaper stock, small stain at left middle of front page, not effecting headline. * The January 21, 1981 Late City Edition of the New York Times, with headlines announcing Reagan's inauguration as President, & the freeing of the U.S. hostages from captivity in Iran. With extensive coverage & commentary on these historic events as they were happening throughout the edition. Complete loose-folded newspaper, four sections, in fine condition with yellowing to low quality newspaper stock, small tears to edges especially right edge of top front page not effecting text. * An original 1981 color poster entitled "Bedtime for Brezhnev," a parody of Reagan's Hollywood film career applied to the cold war that was coming to a head, with Reagan & Brezhnev shown as western movie figures in a showdown. Indeed, it would be the big bedtime for the Soviet leader not long after this satiric production. Tube-wrapped poster on semi-glossy thick high-quality paper stock, in very fine, substantially mint condition, still in original clear plastic tube-bag. * The March 31, 1981 City Edition of the New York Times, with front page headline & photos of the assassination attempt on Reagan the previous afternoon, with many articles, editorials, etc. throughout the edition. Complete loose-folded newspaper, four sections, in fine condition with yellowing of low quality newspaper stock, minor tears & creases at edges. * The March 31, 1981 early Extra Edition of the New York Post, with the bold front page headline "IRON MAN REAGAN!" & "18 Pages of Dramatic Photos & Stories" on the "Presidential Assassination bid." Complete loose-folded newspaper in very fine condition, with yellowing of low quality newspaper stock, very minor tears & creases to edges, leaves very flat & intact. * The March 31, 1981 Final Extra Edition of the New York Post, with the bold front page headline "REAGAN IS BACK IN COMMAND!" & with another "18 pages of dramatic photos & stories," similar to the earlier Edition above, with some variations. Complete loose-folded newspaper in same very fine condition as the early Extra Edition described above. * The August 28, 1981 "Tonight Final" Edition of the New York Daily News, with a bold headline regarding the arraignment of Reagan's assailant, John Hinckley Jr., "I'M NOT GUILTY," along with an announcement that this is the last "Tonight" edition to be printed, on the front page. Complete loose-folded newspaper in fine condition, with yellowing of low quality newspaper stock, appx 1&1/4 inch closed tear at middle right edge of front page that extends very slightly into headline. * The January 4, 1982 Special Issue of Newsweek magazine, with the front cover heading "Looking Back At '81," with articles & photos of the major events of that year, including the assassination attempts on Reagan & Pope John Paul II, the assassination of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat, & the Polish Solidarity movement. Stapled periodical in very fine condition, with very minor creases at staples, very small vertical smudge/crease at upper right corner of front cover, & nearly invisible near middle of right edge, neither effecting image. Glossy high quality paper with very slight yellowing to edges, text & images very sharp throughout. * An original 1984 color poster with a very large photo of Reagan & the quote "We begin bombing in five minutes," which he uttered off-the-cuff into a microphone & was recorded before an official pronouncement, regarding the Soviet Union. There is an image of a clock with hands at five minutes before midnight. A popular expression of an intense moment in the cold war in its last phase. Tube- wrapped poster on glossy high-quality paper stock, in near fine condition with some relatively small closed tears at edges, particularly upper edge, & some small creases & bumps that very slightly effect image. The Ronald Reagan Collection is a fascinating window into the culture & society of three decades ago, so near & yet so distant with hindsight. Most rare & collectible as a whole, & so offered accordingly. Fine/Very Fine. [Item #1594]
