The Alternative Press

Ann Arbor, MI: The Alternative Press, Circa 1990s. First Editions. Broadsides, postcards. Miscellany (10 postcards, 2 broadsides). Here is a miscellaneous assortment of rarities from the Alternative Press, founded in the 1960s by Ken Mikolowski & his late wife, the noted painter Ann Mikolowski. Over the years it has published broadsides, postcards & other small, exquisite productions with works by Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Diane di Prima, Anne Waldman & many others. In its later history, after moving from Detroit to Ann Arbor, the Press engaged subscribers in annual mailings, where delightful surprises appeared in the snail-mail box. This collection dates from that period, approximately the late 1990s. It consists of ten postcards, some illustrated, with works by Sadiq Bey, Lee Ann Brown (with drawing by Ann Mikolowski), Jack Collom (hand-cursive written in marker), Elaine Equi, Jim Gustafson (with photo-collage & hand-#36 & date 4-18-96), Paul Hoover, Joanne Kyger & Donald Guravich, Ned Richardson, Carl Schurer (with pasted photo & numbered 435/500) & Al Young. Also included are two letter-sized broadsides, one announcing the mailings ("Art Poetry Melodrama"), the other a poem by Sherman Alexie, The Museum of Tolerance. A fine assortment from this venerable small press, in very fine condition, all items virtually mint with only the slightest scuffing or creased corners to a few of the postcards. Very Fine.
