Caliban is Calling the Tribes Together

Ann Arbor, MI: Caliban, 1986. First Printing. Broadside. Signed by eight contributors to the inaugural issue of Caliban Book A large (15"x24") broadside which, as stated at the bottom, "...was printed in an edition of 250 copies on the occasion of a party to celebrate the publication of the first issue of Caliban on Friday, January 23, 1986 at Shaman Drum Bookshop, Ann Arbor, Michigan. It has been signed by a number of authors whose work appears in Caliban." Karl Pohrt (1947-2013) was the founder & proprietor of Shaman Drum, a legendary independent bookstore that flourished here for three decades, & was a beloved mentor & charter associate of Third Mind Books. Karl was an important link between the University of Michigan & the larger literary community, a gifted journalist & a devoted promoter of all things literary. This broadside to celebrate the inauguration of the locally published literary journal is an example of his work & legacy. Caliban, edited by Lawrence R. Smith, published in print from 1986-1996 & revived online since 2010, has featured contributions from many of the most important American poets, writers & artists. This broadside is signed by eight contributors to the first issue, several of them local, including Charles Baxter, Mary Chuang, Clayton Eshleman, Janet Kauffman, Lawrence R. Smith & Diane Wakoski. Contains a prose-poem manifesto by Smith (also the editor of Caliban as noted), above which is an illustration by Tom Pohrt, the noted illustrator & Karl's brother; & below which are the eight signatures in two columns of four. A magnificent & meaningful production, very rare & significant. In very fine condition, virtually pristine except for very slight crease-bumps at lower corners & at left edge just above corner. Item is currently mounted on stiff board, in protective shrinkwrap; will be shipped rolled in a tube. Very Fine. [Item #1976]
