[Item #2228] Motor City Comics No. 2. Robert Crumb.

Motor City Comics No. 2

San Francisco, CA: The Rip Off Press, 1970. Third Printing. Stapled Wrappers. The second & last number of the golden age underground comic entirely written & illustrated by Robert Crumb. In this work of twisted genius, Crumb's struggle between presenting a truly feminist character in the form of Lenore Goldberg & her Girl Commandos, & the un-self-censored expression of his fetishistic-misogynist fantasies is especially pronounced, as the naked amazon Goldberg runs amok & is totally contrasted in the "Simp and the Gimp" episode in which the female character is subjected to debasement as only Crumb can depict. With other episodes including "Shuman the Human's Night of Terror," this is Crumb at the peak (nadir?) of his outrageously provocative best (worst?). The influence of countercultural comix such as this continues in our art & culture. This is the third printing to the best of our knowledge, based on scholarship & comparison with images of other third printings, indicated by the rounded Rip Off Press logo encircled at upper left corner of front cover (a different-style logo is on first printing though we have not been able to obtain any images; second printing has a sticker-logo); glossy front cover (fourth printing has matte front cover); & fifty-cent cover price. An essential Crumb collectible for the adult acolyte, in its third-rarest form, still close to original publication. In relatively fine condition, approximately equivalent to a 6.0 grade per Fogel's, CGC, etc.: Mild rubbing, creasing & discoloration of front, back covers; light browning & soiling of back cover esp. at white background & margins; tiny bumps at all corners; light crease along length of spine; tiny hole-tears at staple corners. Interior fine except for browning of just-above-newspaper quality pages esp. margins & edges effecting inner front & back covers; but pages not brittle & with only the slightest acidic scent; very small ink squiggle at mid-right blank margin of first page after inner front cover not effecting text or illustration. Fine. [Item #2228]
