Living Fossil

Delray Beach, FL: Jack Saunders, Circa 1985. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "Be the first in your hometown, college dormitory, barracks, mental ward, prison dayroom, or drying-out farm to have a copy of the Great American Unpublished, or Underpublished, Novel." (from back cover) A particularly obscure production by the cult writer's writer Jack Saunders (1939 - 2018), A U.S. Air Force veteran & technical writer for IBM who wrote prolifically throughout his life in Florida, mostly self- or unpublished works. This booklet is partly a collection of supposed blurbs, some of them well-known maxims by such Beat-&-Beyond figures as Hunter S. Thompson not originally written about but applied tongue-in-cheek to Saunders; some actually relating to him directly by Charles Bukowski, Ann Charters & many others. There is also a bibliography-list of Saunders' works & an actual "Resume" on the last page. Included is a loose, stamped postcard-petition addressed to the Florida Department of State's Arts Recognition Program with the statement on verso "I think the State of Florida should name/ Jack Saunders a Living Fossil," with spaces for a Saunders follower's signature, name & address. Front cover illustration of "Jack the Raver Saunders" with pencil in place of his nose, & an interior illustration, by "Blaster." A scarce & delightfully humorous, self-consciously satirical relic of an elusive writer, in very fine condition with only sparse rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front & back covers; lightest wear & tiny bumps to edges & corners of same; very slight wear to stapled spine. Interior very fine with only faint creases & tiny bumps to edges & corners of some page leaves. Loose postcard in substantially mint condition. Very Fine. [Item #3116]
