New York, NY: New Directions Books, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. "Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) served his broadcasting apprenticeship as a teenager...Then, starting in 1943 and continuing until his death, Thomas often sat behind a BBC microphone, variously giving radio talks, introducing poetry selections, participating in roundtable discussions, reading dramas, essays, poems. His was a glorious voice and he had a special ease and inventiveness on the air." (from front flap) The complete transcripts for every radio broadcast delivered by the iconic Welsh poet, among the giants of twentieth-century literature. As noted by the publisher, the script for "Under Milk Wood," Thomas' last broadcast, is the only item not included here & is available in a separate book by the same fabled imprint, James Laughlin's New Directions Books. Edited & with a general introduction & introductory notes before each broadcast by Ralph Maud (1928-2014), the Canadian scholar who was among the foremost experts regarding Thomas & Black Mountain-&-Beyond poet Charles Olson. First hardcover edition, presumed first printing. Also included with this copy is a clipping of a poem about Thomas by the acclaimed poet Philip Levine (1928-2015), from the January 2, 1995 issue of The Nation magazine. The previous owner of this book was James Perrizo (1944-2006), a major Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who at one time was the assistant to Edie Parker, Jack Kerouac's first wife. A very important Thomas collectible with esteemed provenance. Book in very fine condition, substantially mint inside & out with untrimmed side edge of text block as issued. Unclipped dust jacket in very fine condition with only mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; very light wear to edges & corners of same; a few faint creases at mid-lower edge of back cover. Previous seller's sticker at lower right corner of back cover retained, we are virtually certain it is from Shaman Drum Bookshop, the late lamented bookstore founded by our beloved mentor, the great Karl Pohrt (1947-2013) & frequented by Perrizo.
