Los Angeles, CA: The Writers' Program, Department of the Arts, UCLA Extension, 1989-1991. First Printings. Softcovers. Issue 2 signed by poet Diane Wakoski at her contribution. The first four numbers of the literary journal published by the prestigious Writers' Program at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Many of the contributors studied at the Program or otherwise as graduate students at the University. Issue 1, Spring-Summer 1989, features an excerpt from a then-in-progress novel by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, the Phillipine-American writer who has since gone on to become a very popular & prolific novelist; & an interview with Brian Moore, the late venerable Irish-Canadian-American novelist & screenwriter, conducted by Editorial Assistant & Program Representative Meryl Ginsberg. Issue 2, Winter-Spring 1990, features a special section entitled "Contemporary Poets and the Need to Write" with essays by acclaimed poets Nikki Giovanni, Donald Hall, Philip Levine, Anne Waldman & Diane Wakoski, who signed her name with its characteristic doodle below her contribution (pg. 52); & a special section of poems & prose for children with a story by Lillian (Hammer) Ross, a noted children's author who is not to be confused with the legendary late New Yorker writer. Issue 3, Winter 1990-91, features an early interview with best-selling novelist T. Coraghessan Boyle conducted by Program instructor & writer Eric Goodman. Issue 4, Summer 1991, features an interview with the esteemed playwright Christopher Durang conducted by Program playwriting instructor Ellen Byron. All issues with notes on cover illustrators at rear sides of front covers; notes on contributors & contemporary ads. A very rare contiguous set of this important & elusive journal, especially with Wakoski's autograph in the second issue. All four volumes in very fine condition with only very minor rubbing to front, back covers & spines; very light wear & tiny bumps to edges & corners of same; one slightly angled vertical crease beginning at upper right edge of front cover through near-lower edge of issue 2. Interiors all very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Original errata slip, folded in half horizontally, loosely inserted between pages 196 & 197 of issue 2, in excellent condition. An extra handling charge will be added for shipping due to the weight of this bundle. Very Fine. [Item #3148]
