This early number of the literary journal in its original Michigan incarnation features contributions by Donald Hall (1928-2018), the great prize-winning poet who at one time was a member of the University of Michigan faculty; & Joyce Carol Oates, the acclaimed, super-prolific novelist. With much more, including a portfolio of disturbing photographs by Danny Lyon that accompany his article on Haiti's troubles. Published by Dr. Sidney A. Lutz (1932-2018), a "serial entrepreneur" well-known in the metropolitan Detroit community. The editorial board for this issue included current or former Ann Arborites Peter Nagourney, a now-retired UM professor; Keith Taylor, poet & UM professor; & Richard Tillinghast, poet & former UM professor. This writer is or was acquainted with all four of the above. Witness continues to be published by the Black Mountain Institute (named after & in the spirit of the fabled college that spawned the "Black Mountain School" of poetry) at the University of Nevada- Las Vegas. With reproduction of Robert Rauschenberg's artwork, "Kite" (1963) on back cover; notes on contributors, contemporary ads, etc. A delightful & important literary collectible, complete with loosely inserted original subscription envelope. In fine condition with only very minor rubbing & scratching to glossy front, back covers & spine; mild wear & tiny-to-small bumps & creases to edges & corners of same; one very small vertical tear resulting in loss of glossy surface, & two small spot-stains, at lower edge of front cover; one tiny gauge-tear at lower area of spine just above & barely effecting the word "Volume," a few faint, small stain-spots at lower edge of text block. Interior very fine with only small-to-miniscule bump-curves at top corners of page leaves. Fine. [Item #3150]
