La Crosse, WI; n/p: Juniper Press; n/p, 1977; n/d. Limited First Edition; Copy of Unpublished Manuscript. Stapled Wrappers; Stapled Sheets. Inscribed & signed by John Woods to James Perrizo. A chapbook of poems by John Woods (1926-1995), a respected poet & professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. One of 400 un-numbered copies printed & published as Juniper Book 21 in a series by Juniper Press of La Crosse, Wisconsin. On the title page, the poet has inscribed, signed & dated: "To Jim/ with thanks/ (signed) John/ Woods/ 5/12/90." "Jim" is James Perrizo (1944-2006) a major Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who at one time was the assistant to Edie Parker, Jack Kerouac's first wife. Also loosely included in this item, as we found it, is an unpublished essay by Woods entitled "Sitting Down in the Profession or In Training for Olympus," copy of a five-page typescript with text on both sides of three 8&1/2"x11" sheets (except for last sheet with text only on recto). The essay describes what Woods has learned & concluded about poets & the writing of poetry, & was likely used with students in his classes. A very interesting & collectible Woods chapbook with ephemera & rich association. Chapbook in near-fine condition with mild rubbing & fading to light purple front, back covers & esp. stapled spine; very light wear, creasing & tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; small-to-medium groups of spot-stains at front & esp. back covers; one tiny gauge-hole at back cover just beside lower staple. Interior very fine except for fading & staining noted above at inner front & back covers. Essay in fine condition, folded horizontally in half with attendant crease; single staple at upper left corner in process of rusting with a short line of bleeding therefrom onto lower left corner of first page; very light wear & a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of page leaves.
