The poems are divided into three parts, entitled River, Home & Lake, preceded by an invocation-like Prologue. The chief subjects are Peters' ancestors & relatives, including his father, mother & a very young beloved son Richard who suddenly & tragically died years earlier; & the rural Wisconsin environment of his parents & youth, including gangster lore (it was an area to where Chicago mobsters retreated). On the title page, Peters has hand-inscribed & signed: "Jim (underline)/ This is where the/ Dillinger poems started (underline)/ (signed) Robert Peters/ (doodle-flourish)." "Jim" is the late James Perrizo, a major Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who was a friend of & corresponded extensively with Peters. Indeed, the poem "What John Dillinger Meant to Me" (pgs. 28-29) describes the notorious outlaw's misadventures in Wisconsin. Burroughs' Cobblestone Gardens, greatly enriched by this inscription, association & provenance.
