American Poetry, Vol. 2, No. 2, Winter 1985

Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Company, Inc., 1985. First Printing. Softcover. Inscribed & Signed by Robert Peters to James Perrizo; & signed by Diane Wakoski. This number of the prestigious scholarly journal, edited by Lee Bartlett & Peter White, features an article by the acclaimed, long Michigan-based poet Diane Wakoski, the third in a series where she spotlights poets she felt were neglected. Here, Wakoski discusses the works of Robert Peters (1924-2014), the profound, prolific & quite unique American poet, playwright, critic & scholar ("Neglected Poets 3: Robert Peters"). On the contents page, Wakoski has hand-written her signature next to her reference, with characteristic series of vertical doodles. Peters, the subject of her article, has also hand-inscribed & signed, beginning at the upper right blank margin: "For Jim/ (signed) Robert P./ vertical doodle-flourish (of flower(?) extending downward to just next to Wakoski's signature)." "Jim" is the late James Perrizo, a noted Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who was friends with both poets, especially Peters with whom he corresponded extensively. Also in this issue is the text of a lengthy letter submitted by Clayton Eshleman in response to an earlier article about his poetry by Wakoski. Eshleman, a venerable, award-winning poet, translator & educator, was also acquainted with & highly collected by Perrizo; & is our own dear friend & mentor here near our hometown of Ann Arbor. With more essays, reviews, etc. Front cover artwork, "Letter to Lillian #1: God Bless the Man" (1984) by Janet Maher. A most desirable issue of this collectible journal, especially with these two signatures, inscription & the intersection of three esteemed poets along with one of their major disciples. In fine condition with only very light rubbing to front, back covers & spine; lightest wear, a few tiny bumps & short, faint creases at-near edges & corners of same; one light vertical crease across middle of front cover; very mild rubbing-browning & occasional tiny spots at edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small-to-tiny bump-waves at upper corners of page leaves. Fine. [Item #3299]
