The twenty-third number of the now-classic "Literary Bi-annual of the Whole Art," edited & with contributions by the acclaimed, award-winning American poet, translator & scholar Clayton Eshleman; co-(managing) edited by his wife Caryl, & with a prestigious masthead that includes Charles Bernstein, Clark Coolidge & Jerome Rothenberg. There is a wonderful photograph of the entire group including all of the above (pg. 5) posing in front of the Eshlemans' Ypsilanti, Michigan residence. By this time (1988), Eshleman had moved from California to Ypsilanti to teach at Eastern Michigan University, & Sulfur became published under EMU's auspices. The Eshlemans still live in the home depicted, where we have been privileged to visit them. Among the contributors to this issue are Eshleman himself (chapter essays 7 & 8 from "Novices: A Study of Poetic Apprenticeship"); the then-just-deceased George Butterick, most renowned for his work with & about Charles Olson (Section 30 from his poem "Runes"); the legendary avant-garde composer-performer-philosopher John Cage (synopses of "Europeras 1 & 2"); the great Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca (two Suites translated by Rothenberg); Rothenberg (the two-part poem/ prose poem "Peroration for a Lost Town") & many more. On the title-masthead page, Eshleman has hand-written his signature near top right edge. As with every issue, there are reproductions of important cutting-edge artists' works, here including a portfolio of details from (very disturbing) paintings by Leon Golub; & an untitled drawing by Philip Guston. With a section of reviews, including of then-latest works by Kenward Elmslie & Anne Waldman; & a "Reading" critical review of several writers' works by Eshleman. With color reproduction of artwork by Golub ("Two Heads I") wrapped around front, back cover & spine; contemporary ads (including for our beloved late mentor Karl Pohrt's Shaman Drum Bookshop that once graced Ann Arbor on inner front cover); contributor notes. A particularly rich issue in this most important & collectible series, especially with its esteemed founding editor-contributor's signature. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing & a few miniscule spots to front, back covers & spine; very light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same.
