[Item #3344] The Teeth-Mother Naked At Last. Robert Bly.

The Teeth-Mother Naked At Last

Madison, MN: American Writers Against The Vietnam War/ Sixties Press, 1970. Pre-First Edition, Second Printing. Single Folded Sheet. "Helicopters flutter overhead. the death-/ bee is coming. Supersabres/ like knots of neurotic energy sweep/ around and return./ This is Hamilton's triumph./ This is the advantage of a centralized bank./ B-52's come from Guam. All the teachers/ die in flames. The hopes of Tolstoy fall asleep in the/ ant-heap./ Do not ask for mercy." (from Part I, pg. 2) Among the most circulated & influential poems of the countercultural anti-Vietnam War movement during the later 1960s- early 1970s, by the great Americal Maestro Poet Robert Bly, still with us & active at age 92 as of this writing. This copy is from the then-freely-distributed pamphlet "folder" edition that preceded a complete, official edition published by City Lights Books later that year (1970). The yellow color of the paper distinguishes this as the second printing of this pre-publication edition, first printings were on green paper. As noted below the end of the poem on the last, twelfth page: "This folder is available at no charge from American Writers Against The Vietnam War, c/o Sixties Press, Madison, Minnesota 56256. Not to be sold. Printed as a gift to the Resistance by Robert Bly, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti for City Lights Books...To be published later with additions as City Lights Pocket Poets Series #27." An interesting factoid for our hair-splitting collectors is that the City Lights edition was actually Pocket Poets Series No. 26. This fiery, impassioned Jeremiad of a poem was recited by Bly in a circuit of "read-ins" where Allen Ginsberg & many other iconic protest-poets joined him, & this edition was probably distributed at these events. Single sheet folded vertically into six panels with printing on both sides, making twelve pages. A most desirable relic of the era when American "Resistance" first really asserted itself, in exceptionally very fine condition: Just a tiny amount of rubbing & few short, faint creases to front & back panels; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of panel-leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3344]
