This historic, very first number of the prestigious literary journal chiefly edited by Bradford Morrow is subtitled "A Festschrift in honor of James Laughlin, Publisher of New Directions" & features many essays, odes & tributes to the legendary litterateur by Robert Creeley, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Donald Hall, Denise Levertov, Michael McClure (who passed away recently as of this writing), James Purdy, Kenneth Rexroth (in the form of a lengthy interview conducted by Morrow), Jerome Rothenberg, Tennessee Williams & other literary eminences across the spectrum & generations who knew & were published by him. Also with a section of photographs spanning the decades with Laughlin in the company of some of his famous writers. This landmark issue also has contributions of original poetry & prose unrelated to Laughlin by Robert Bly, Paul Bowles (translation into English of a play by his Moroccan protege Mohammed Mrabet), Cid Corman, Clayton Eshleman, Thom Gunn, Robert Penn Warren & others. Eshleman, the acclaimed & prolific poet, editor & educator, our good friend & mentor who has long lived here in Michigan, has hand-written his signature on the first Table of Contents page (pg. 5) at upper blank margin.
