Winston-Salem, NC: Wake Forest University Press, 1994. First American Softcover Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Ciaran Carson to Thomas Rain Crowe. A celebrated collection of poems by Ciaran Carson (1948-2019), the acclaimed Northern Irish poet & novelist. Winner of the first T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize as noted on back cover, this is the first American trade-format softcover edition in sewn binding, published simultaneously with a hardcover edition & preceded by the first Ireland-UK edition the previous year (1993). With the exception of the first poem in the Irish language, the text is in English & includes mostly original works as well as translations of several excerpts from Ovid's Metamorphoses. On the title page, Carson has hand-written & signed: "For Thomas Crowe/ + all the best/ (signed) Ciaran C./ Spoleto 96." Thomas Rain Crowe, the noted American poet & publisher, is a contemporary of his late fellow poet Carson & was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). We presume that "Spoleto" refers to the annual literary & arts festival held in Charleston, South Carolina- Crowe has long lived in nearby North Carolina. A key collectible in the Carson canon, enriched by this very significant association & provenance. In very fine condition with only lightest rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mildest wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bump-folds at lower corners of last two page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3555]
