Spartanburg, SC: Holocene Press, 1992. Second Edition (First Edition Thus). Softcover. Inscribed & signed (twice) by John Lane to Thomas Rain Crowe. "In the animal light of early morning/ dreams persist but I am quickly/ victim to the world's precision-" ("Waking in the Blue Ridge," first stanza, pg. 11) A collection of poems by John Lane, the acclaimed & prolific South Carolina-native poet, environmentalist & educator. The poems here, as in his many other volumes, are evocative & deceptively almost conversational, with a clear style that is unique & can't be traced to any "School" but his own. As explained in Colophon, "This second edition with new cover was printed by Fidlar Doubleday POD in special arrangement with Holocene Press and will be printed in small batches as needed." Preceded & "Available only for a short time in 1992 in a limited edition from North Carolina's legendary Briarpatch Press...". We presume that this second edition/ first edition thus was published considerably later than the first 1992 edition, but no new date is noted. Since we have not encountered any other copies of this edition, we deduct that it is one of a "small batch" that exceeds the first edition in rarity. On shorter title page, Lane has hand-written & signed: "Tom & Nan-/ Here's a little reminder/ of the good old days, when we/ were young and lyrical-/ Thanks for all your/ support all these/ years,/ (signed) John/ 10/11/06(?)/ Athens (GA?)/ After an evening of land-/ talk & (illegible)." "Tom & Nan" are Thomas Rain Crowe & his partner, Nan. Crowe, the noted poet & publisher, was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). North Carolinian Crowe & Lane are close friends & colleagues. Additionally, Lane has hand-written his full signature just below & very slightly overlapping his printed name on title page. A most desirable Lane collectible, especially with this significant poet-to-poet association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very mild rubbing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3569]
