Boston, MA: The Seventies Press/ Beacon Press, 1977. First Softcover Edition, Third Printing. Softcover. Signed by Robert Bly; & with hand-illustration possibly also by him. "Few major achievements of world literature are as little known to Americans as the great ecstatic poetry of the Hindus and the Sufis, as exemplified by the work of the 15th-century master, Kabir. Irreverent while being intensely religious, Kabir seems incredibly playful in his taunting of the sacred dogmas of his time...(Robert) Bly has done much more than retranslate into American diction. A noted poet himself, he has breathed new life into the work of a fascinating poet." (from back cover) The canonical American poet Robert Bly's rejuvenation-reinterpretation of classic poems by Kabir, the revered fifteenth-century Indian poet, mystic & saint. With front cover illustration & design by Karyl Klopp; reproductions of vintage Indian illustrations throughout. This is the first softcover edition, published simultaneously with a hardcover edition, third printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. On the title page, Bly has hand-written his signature with an underline-flourish in blue ink. Also, on preceding shorter title page, there is a relevant hand-drawing in black ink that may also be the work of Bly. From the library of Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). At that time & place, Bly was among the mentor generation of poets who collaborated with the Baby Beats at festivals & activist rallies. Crowe worked with Bly right around the time of this volume's first release. A most important Bly collectible with very significant association & provenance. In fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching, spotting & creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with Crowe's checkmarks in light pencil at titles of some poems; tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #3574]
