"Roxie Powell is a Kansan born in Wichita in 1935. After high school he began his career of many F's in several universities both in the US and abroad. After an undergraduate degree in Geology and work on oil rigs, his friend of over 50 years, Charley Plymell, recommended him to the Director of the Writing Seminars at The Johns Hopkins U. He was accepted...At the time he was working on Oahu, Hawaii, as a dry wall hanger and taper. Prior to this he enjoyed a speckled if not sparkling career which would fill a large city telephone book, having acquired five marriages including three lost to death, one annulment and one divorce. (from back cover) The sixth volume of poems by Roxie Powell, a member of the "Wichita Vortex" group of writers under the mentorship of his friend Charles Plymell, the great American poet, printer, publisher & Legendary Literary Outlaw who is a primary founder of the Vortex. With seventeen riveting, compact poems that reflect the impressions of a most experienced poet who has really lived, as further noted on back cover: "Mr. Powell states that he has resided in 22 countries and has enjoyed a charmed marriage to his present wife for 19 years" (28 by now, we hope...). Several of the poems feature his friends who are well-known to Third Minders including Neal Cassady, Anselm Hollo, Plymell & Janine Pommy Vega. With front cover collage illustration by the late Claude Pelieu, Plymell's step-father-in-law who along with his wife Mary Beach (mother of Charles' wife Pamela Beach Plymell) was an important artist & writer associated with William S. Burroughs & the cut-up writing method. First edition as stated on copyright page, one of an edition of 126 copies as noted on colophon. Although not among the 26/126 copies designated as lettered & signed, on title page Powell has hand-written & signed: "Charley,/ The one and only who has/ always been there for me./ Thanks./ (signed) Roxy." Further down the page below this, he has additionally written: "and thanks for Claude's collage./ It works./ (signed) Roxy." A most desirable Powell collectible, especially with these warm poet-to-poet inscriptions, associations & provenance. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; one tiny non-penetrating pinhole-gauge at upper middle right edge of front cover. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3585]
