Ubu Rex: A New Translation by David Copelin / (Ubu Roi)

Vancouver, CA: Pulp Press, 1973. First Edition Thus. Softcover. "'Ubu Rex' is a translation of Alfred Jarry's 'Ubu Roi,' the first of a series of plays and fragments concerning [character] Pa Ubu and his adventures. The world premiere of Jarry's infamous work took place in Paris in 1896; it provoked a riot in the theatre, and a storm of critical reaction and controversy. Though Jarry died in 1907, his example and influence has been powerful...Antonin Artaud named his theatre after Jarry, and the latter's literary followers [Eugene Ionesco, among them] founded an organization dedicated to the appreciation, art and science of Ubuism, known as the College de Pataphysique." (from "Note" at the play's cessation). Offered here is the very hard-to-find Pulp Press / David Copelin translation of the notorious Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi," titled here as "Ubu Rex." The play could be described in historical-literary shorthand as a scatological parody of Shakespeare's "Macbeth," but the essence of the work goes far beyond that terse description. Given that, as of this writing, it is the strange and divisive year 2020, I am reminded of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel's challenge to dramatists the world over on the occasion of President's Day, 2018. Vogel's challenge comprised of an invitation to write five-page sketches "...placing the Trump administration in the land of Ubu Roi," as Ubu endeavors upon a merciless campaign to do away with political rivals and seize the throne. What follows is a series of hideous land-grabs, intentional violence against the citizenry, and failed or brutishly-implemented attempts at financial reform. (Chicago, IL: In These Times Magazine, 2018: "How a 19th Century Absurdist Playwright Accidentally Predicted Trump," by Hannah Steinkopf-Frank). Sound familiar?
