Three Original Sheets in Envelopes from "The Institute of Further Studies"

Buffalo, NY: Charles Olson/ The Institute of Further Studies, 1968. First Editions. Single Sheets Folded in Envelopes. "Wholly absorbed/ into my own conduits to/ an inner nature or subterranean lake/ the depths or bounds of which I more and more/ explore and know more/ of, in the sense that other than that all else/ closes out and I tend further to fall into/ the Beloved Lake and I am blinder from/..." (from "Additions", March 1968- 2) Three original dispatches from "The Institute of Further Studies" series by Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Towering (literally & in literature) Black Mountain School-&-Beyond American poet. Olson is by far our favorite erudite-to-the-point-of-puzzlement Beat-era (though decidedly not Beat) master, with near-infinite depth, sweep & allusions; yet anchored in the history, people & places of New England, particularly his home of Gloucester, Massachusetts. His poems, as well as his ideas about poetry, continue to inspire acolytes & provoke critics; his prolific legacy continues to be parsed & analyzed. Here we have three very late & obscure (even for Olson) productions: Three sheets, each folded once width-wise & in their original envelopes with name of the "Institute," a drawing & address. In approximate order are these poems (or excerpts) printed on recto only of each sheet: "Additions", March 1968- 2 (quoted above); "Reading about my world, March 6, 1968"; & an untitled poem with date of "['LX VII]." Each poem is in an identical envelope as described above. Very rare collectibles from our Maximus Poet-Seer of the American Collective Consciousness. All sheets are simply sumptuous handmade paper folded as noted above, in very fine, substantially mint condition with slightly erratic edges as produced. Envelopes very fine with only slight browning esp. at/near edges & corners; two completely intact & one (with "Reading about my world...") having been opened neatly at top with triangular flap still glued to verso. Very Fine. [Item #3696]
