Over the Stage of Kansas

New York, NY: Telephone Books, 1973. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Charles Plymell. "Plymell and his friends inventing the Wichita Vortex contribute to a tradition stretching back from Lamantia thru Sherwood Anderson to Poe and earlier American vibration artists of those provinces. I interpret his statement as prophetic fragment memory of innocence, visionary great fear, & warm glimmer: a new species?" (Allen Ginsberg, quoted on back cover) This is an extremely rare early item by Charles Plymell, the critically important writer, printer, publisher & legendary literary outlaw. It is a volume of poems published a few years after The Last of the Moccasins, a cult milestone of the post-Beat canon. Besides Ginsberg, there are enthusiastic back cover comments by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jeff Nuttall & Brown Miller of the Small Press Review. From an edition of 500 un-numbered copies as noted in colophon, this copy is signed by Charles Plymell on the title page. A top Plymell collectible. In fine condition, with only moderate spotting & browning esp. at & near edges of front, back covers & stapled spine; very light wear, a few tiny bumps & short, faint creases at edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting at interior with attendant small amount of bleeding & spotting to middle pages; mild browning & spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only rust results just noted; one additional tiny spot at lower edge of one page; tiny bumps at corners of page leaves. Fine. [Item #1545]
