ISBN: (SBN)684123711;6841
New York, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1971. First Edition; First Softcover Edition. Hardcover. With signature of Allen DeLoach, previous owner, in hardcover edition. We offer two editions of one of the earliest comprehensive studies of the Beat phenomenon, still regarded as an important source of information on “The tumultuous ‘50s movement and its impact on today” (subtitle on front covers). The author Bruce Cook (1932-2003) interviewed Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs & other key figures, & produced “...the most complete, relaxed and convincing summary of a movement that has not really died, but only been regenerated on a broader scale among young people all over the world today.” (Seymour Krim, quoted on back covers) (1) A copy of the first hardcover edition, with distinguished provenance: It belonged to Allen DeLoach, the poet & publisher at the center of the NYC lower east side literary scene of the 1960s, with his owner signature in pencil on the first blank page; as well as (presumably) his underlining & occasional marginalia on a few pages, also in pencil. (2) A copy of the first softcover edition, part of the publisher's Scribner Library/ Lyceum Editions series. Identical to (1) except for different graphics on spine & back cover; different & additional blurbs on back cover. An excellent reading copy to help preserve the uniquely rare hardcover version. (1) Book in fine condition with only slight rubbing & fading to edges & corners of cloth front, back covers & spine; mild-to-moderate rubbing, spotting & small areas of water staining to edges of text block. Interior very fine with underlining & occasional marginalia presumably by DeLoach on a few pages (see above); tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Unclipped dust jacket in near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching, light browning, sunning & occasional light water staining to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, light creasing & a few tiny bumps, closed tears at edges & corners of same. (2) In fine condition with only mild rubbing, scratching & sparse, tiny spots to front, back covers & spine; very light wear & a few tiny bumps to edges & corners of same; minor rubbing & occasional small spots & smudges to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small-tiny bumps & creases at corners of some page leaves. Near Fine / Near Fine. [Item #1648]
