Bibliomen: Twenty Characters Waiting for a Book. Gene Wolfe.

Bibliomen: Twenty Characters Waiting for a Book

New Castle, VA: Cheap Street, 1984. Original Typesetting/Galleys (rejected). Loose Sheets in Band. First (title-dedication) sheet signed by Gene Wolfe. As written in pencil on the paper band holding them together, this is the "original typesetting/galleys rejected for poor casting" of a short collection of linked stories by Gene Wolfe, the prolific, award-winning writer whose work has been broadly categorized as science fiction/fantasy but is regarded as sui generis. On the top sheet, Wolfe has boldly signed his name in red ink, below the dedication to his mother. Twenty-nine sheets measuring 6"x12", with the heading "Bibliomen Galley" & page number at top of each except the first sheet. Text on front only, versos of sheets all blank. The publisher's provisional work product leading up to a limited edition, numbered & signed by Wolfe & illustrator George Barr, that was issued in 1984 (Barr's illustrations are not part of these galleys). A unique & desirable item for the Wolfe collector, or for that matter bibliomen & -women everywhere. In fine condition, with only mild water stains at lower edge of first two sheets; minor bump-wave-creases at all corners of all sheets; a few light scratches & very minor spotting on first sheet with one tiny spot barely effecting "W" in signature; a few tiny spots on blank verso of last sheet. Fine. [Item #2018]
