Beat Scene No. 42 (Early Spring 2003)

Warwickshire, England: The Beat Scene Press, 2003. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage early spring 2003 number of the magazine-format literary journal edited & published by Kevin Ring in the UK features an interview with Texan Juan Ochoa conducted by Rob Johnson in 2002 on William S. Burroughs' residency there during the mid-late 1940s, a predecessor to Johnson's book, The Lost Years of William S. Burroughs: Beats in South Texas, published in 2006. Also several articles on Jon & Gypsy Lou Webb, whose Loujon Press published the Outsider literary journal, & their relationship with Charles Bukowski; a stranger-than-fiction article about Neal Cassady's brief encounter with president Eisenhower by Steve Edington; an interview conducted by Edington with Anne Murphy on her affair with Cassady; an interview with prolific Beat biographer & poet Tom Clark conducted by Ring; a tribute to artist Larry Rivers who had recently died; & more. With many reviews, including Jack Kerouac's Book of Haikus, & profuse photo-illustrations throughout. Another increasingly rare earlier issue in this collectible series that always fulfills its motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only faintest rubbing to front, back covers; mild creases along length of stapled spine & at spine-edges of covers; very tiny bumps at corners of covers & top, bottom edges of spine; staples beginning to rust. Interior virtually mint except for minor rust noted above. Very Fine. [Item #2149]
