Hardwick, MA: The Four Zoas Press, 1975. Limited First Edition. Single Sheet. A large broadside (16"x22") with the title poem dated September 20, 1975 by Gerard Malanga, the prolific poet & cultural figure associated with Andy Warhol's Factory group during its heyday in the 1960s. The reference to "Charles" in the title is to Charles Olson (1910-1970) the great poet who was a link between earlier schools of American poetry & the newer poets of the Black Mountain & New York Schools, & the Beat Generation. Olson is quoted above the title, & mentioned within the poem. With reproduction of a photograph taken by Malanga of his friend Sheri, to whom the poem is dedicated. As noted by the publisher: "From The Piper of a Sleeping Nation, work-in-progress. Issued in a letterpress edition of 250 numbered & signed copies by The Four Zoas Press on the occasion of a reading by the poet at the University of Connecticut Library Wednesday October 29, 1975..." This is copy No. 64/250, signed in pencil by Malanga & hand-numbered next to his signature. A beautiful production, & a most desirable Malanga rarity. In very fine condition with only one tiny spot below title (probably a flaw as issued on handmade paper); a few very short, faint creases along surface.
Item is currently mounted on stiff board, in protective shrink wrap, will be shipped carefully rolled in a tube. Very Fine. [Item #2185]
