[Item #2205] Zap Comix No. 1. Robert Crumb.

Zap Comix No. 1

San Francisco, CA: Apex Novelties/The Print Mint, 1969. Third Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Zap Comix No. 1 inaugurated the "underground comix" phenomenon, a highlight of the 1960s counterculture. Robert Crumb illustrated & wrote the entire issue, his subversive genius broke all barriers. Mr. Natural, the "Keep on Truckin'..." figures & other images that made their debut here have resonated in the collective consciousness, & they continue to influence art & culture. First published in late 1968, this is the third printing of 1969, distinguished by a 35-cent cover price & no reference to a printer on the back cover (Charles Plymell & Don Donahue were noted on the first & second printings respectively, & the fourth printing of 1975 has a 60-cent cover price). The third-rarest version of an iconic production, still close in time to its original publication & a desirable rarity. As famously stated on the front cover above the title, "Fair Warning: For Adult Intellectuals Only!" In fine/very fine condition more or less equivalent to at least a 6.0 grade per Fogel's, CGC, etc.: Front cover very bright with only slightest rubbing & a few faint creases along spine, upper edge & upper right corner; tiny bump-creases at upper spine & lower right corners of same; back cover slightly rubbed & lightly browned, spotted at white edges & margins; tiny wave-crease at upper left corner of same. Interior very fine except for browning of just-above-newspaper quality paper esp. margins & edges (slightly effecting inner front & back covers), but pages not brittle & with barely any acidic scent; slight wave-crease through upper corners of page leaves between those at covers as described above. Very Fine. [Item #2205]
