[Item #2218] The Collected Adventures of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Gilbert Shelton.

The Collected Adventures of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

San Francisco, CA: The Rip Off Press, 1971. Third Printing. Stapled Wrappers. The first number of the series by Gilbert Shelton dedicated entirely to the adventures of the always-stoned Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Akin to the Three Stooges morphed into the embodiment of the rebellious dope counterculture, the Brothers are now classic characters in the underground comix canon. With many separate episodes or tableaus, including several short "Fat Freddy's Cat" strips. A few episodes are memorably titled, such as "...Little Orphan Amphetamine." This is the third printing, indicated by a fifty-cent cover price; white tire & road on front cover illustration & American flag in back cover illustration with blue background & roughly drawn white stars; as called for by comix scholarship (Fogel's, Comixjoint, etc.). An essential item from the golden age of underground comix in its third-rarest, still close to original form. For adult collectors. In relatively near-fine condition, approximately equivalent to a 5.5 grade per Fogel's, CGC, etc.: Moderate rubbing, creasing, soiling & discoloration to front, back covers; small (approx. dime-sized) area below outstretched arm of middle Brother with paper (sticker?) residue obscuring illustration on front cover; rectangular area (approx. 1&3/4" x 1/4") at lowest part of Brother giving the "bird" sign with illustration removed (sticker removal damage?) just to left of Shelton's signature on back cover; very slight bend of spine edge toward front cover; light crease across length of spine; tiny hole-tears at staple corners. Interior fine except for browning of pages esp. margins & edges lightly effecting inner front & back covers; but pages not brittle & with only lightest acidic scent; very tiny wave-creases at top corners of page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #2218]
