Reality Sandwiches

Paris, France: Christian Bourgois Editeur, 1972. First French Edition. Softcover. Originally published in 1963 as Number Eighteen in the iconic Pocket Poets Series of City Lights Books, this is the first French edition, first printing of March 1972. With English text on left pages, & French text on right pages. The translators are Mary Beach & Claude Pelieu, the important wife-husband team in art, writing & publishing. They knew & collaborated with Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs & many others. Mary Beach was related to Sylvia Beach, the Shakespeare & Co. founder who first published James Joyce's Ulysses; & the couple were the mother & stepfather of Pamela Beach Plymell, who along with her husband Charles Plymell are legendary writers & publishers who have also collaborated with the Beats & others. A large-format softcover in sewn binding, with the original paper band characteristic of French editions present & intact. A very rare & well-produced version of this Ginsberg classic. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing to laminated front, back covers & spine; one small area at upper mid-right edge of front cover where lamination chipped away. Interior very fine with faint angled-horizontal creasing of first fifteen or so page leaves likely as issued. Very Fine. [Item #2240]
