San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1975. First Edition. Softcover. "The truest description of Anne Waldman, director of the Poetry Project at St-Marks-in-the-Bowery, New York, is the title poem of this fast speaking book. Earlier, shorter versions of this poem have been published but this is the latest, fullest text as it has evolved in her brilliant public performances of it. Also included are nine other "chants" with which she has awakened many audiences, and they are worth cutting down trees to print."(back cover) This is the first edition of an important collection of poetry by Anne Waldman, among the primary poets of the later Beat Generation, the New York School & beyond. Issued as No. 33 in the iconic Pocket Poets Series by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books. An essential Waldman collectible from the later part of her early period as she really hit her stride as an emotive performer of her poems. She is still going very strong as of this writing at age 70, as this writer has witnessed this year (2015) at a reading in Ann Arbor & at the fourth European Beat Studies Network Conference in Brussels where she was the first keynote speaker. In fine condition with only very mild rubbing, spotting & scratching to front, back covers & spine incl. one tiny but noticeable spot-stain on white blank area near lower right corner of back cover; several faint horizontal creases at spine-edge of front cover; several faint creases at lower edge-right corner of back cover; small, mild wave-crease extending through lower right front-lower left back covers very slightly through lower corners of page leaves.
