The East Side Scene: American Poetry, 1960-1965

Garden City, NY: Anchor Books/Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1972. First Edition Thus. Softcover. A collection of works by poets of the lower east side of NYC during the first half of the 1960s, a time & place of legendary literary ferment as the Beat Generation touched off a countercultural explosion. Edited & with an introduction & contributions by the late Allen De Loach, a poet & publisher at the center of the scene he compiled here. This is a first printing of the second, mass-market format softcover edition (first edition thus) of 1972, issued four years after the first edition of 1968 published by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in a large-format softcover edition. Among the poets represented are Ted Berrigan, Diane di Prima, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Jerome Rothenberg, Edward Sanders, Diane Wakoski, John Wieners & many other luminaries of the Beat Generation & beyond. A supremely important anthology from a critical time & place, in its second-rarest but still collectible form. In very fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning, spotting & scratching to front, back covers & spine; one faint vertical crease along entire spine toward right edge; a few short horizontal creases at & near top edge of same; very tiny bumps at top edge & upper right corner of front cover. Interior very fine with previous seller price stamped at upper right of first title page/front endpaper. Very Fine. [Item #2378]
