San Francisco, CA: Glide Memorial Church, Circa 1967. First Printing. Single Sheet. A broadside-poster (14"x20") announcing a "Poetry Fiesta" with "music and Dancers," featuring readings by poets Lenore Kandel, Margaret Randall, Marcus Ulewicz & Lew Welch, held at the Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco on December 16, (circa) 1967. Welch (1926-1971?), among the primary poets of the Beat Generation & the San Francisco Renaissance, famously disappeared in 1971, a presumed suicide. Kandel (1932-2009) was affiliated with the Beats & depicted by Jack Kerouac in his novel Big Sur as the character Romana Swartz, & as the girlfriend of the character Dave Wain, based on Welch. Randall, a radical & controversial poet still active at age 79 as of this writing, was an expatriate in Mexico & Cuba for many years & now resides in New Mexico. Ulewicz (we're almost but not quite certain of the spelling) is an enigma, we haven't found any information on him, he may perhaps be related to the poet Laura Ulewicz. The Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco became a center of countercultural activities & events during the hippie-psychedelic blossoming there during the 1960s, & still flourishes. This item epitomizes that time & place, with difficult-to-decipher lettering (with a straight perspective, anyway) morphing from a far-out facial illustration. An exemplary relic, & an outstandingly rare piece of Welch & co.-related literary ephemera. In very fine condition with only a few light, faint creases at upper edge & upper right, both lower corners.
Item is currently mounted on stiff board, in protective shrink wrap, will be shipped carefully rolled in a tube. This item cannot be sent by Media Mail, so extra shipping/handling charges are required. Very Fine. [Item #2497]
