Starting from San Francisco

New York, NY: New Directions Publishing, 1961. First Editions. Hardcover. Two Copies. The third release from one of the formative fathers of the San Francisco Renaissance, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. "These poems of voyage are autobiographical in that they grew out of Ferlinghetti's visits to Chile and Peru in 1960." (back flap) Offered here are two copies of paramount poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "Starting from San Francisco." Included with all First Editions of this book is a 7" 33 1/3 RPM recording of Ferlinghetti reading the title poem, "New York--Albany," and "Overpopulation." These rare recordings of Ferlinghetti have not been digitally replicated and made available for listening on any major streaming platforms. According to Bill Morgan's comprehensive bibliography of Ferlinghetti, he did not like the recording, so in October of 1965 asked that the remaining unbound sheets from the first printing be bound as an inexpensive paperback without the recording--hence the subsequent paperback edition. (Morgan A7, pg. 26) (1) Book in very fine condition with only mild rubbing and soiling to front, back covers and spine; tiny bumps and light wear at all corners and edges; spotting at upper edge of text block. Interior very fine. Record in sealed envelope affixed to inside back cover, and as such presumed mint. Interior very fine. (2) Book in fine condition with light shelf-wear and small scuffs to front and rear boards; mild rubbing and light soiling to front and rear of same; slight uniform chipping to bottom corners of covers. Record in very fine condition, or EX+ in record collectors' parlance. Light hairline scratches upon close examination but aside from occasional light popping will play clean. This bundle allows the collector a prestigious working copy along with a cleaner, sacred stowaway edition for safekeeping. (1) Very Fine/As New, (2) Fine/EX+. [Item #2520]
