White on White broadside with: Flyer announcing Reading and Performances

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1977. First Edition. Broadside. Broadside (10 & 3/4" x 17") with: Flyer, San Francisco, N/D. "On September 24, 1975, the South African (Afrikaner) poet, painter, and anti-apartheid activist Breyten Breytenbach was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment under South Africa's "terrorism" laws. The verdict in the Breytenbach case followed Breytenbach's own confused "confession" to the court. The circumstances of Breytenbach's trial are very disturbing, and strongly suggest that a false confession was extracted from him under torture. Breytenbach is considered the leading poet of the Afrikaans language today, and is a spokesman for the young generation of anti-racist Afrikaners. The only charges entered against him involve activity for solidarity with the Black people's resistance movement..." Produced in a small amount of only 250 copies which were subsequently given out for free by Lawrence Ferlinghetti at poetry readings, "White on White" marks another of Ferlinghetti's efforts in humanist activism to stop international civil injustice. (Morgan A41, pg. 89) Accompanying this broadside is a flyer for a reading from Ferlinghetti that also featured a performance of one of his plays at Project Artaud's People's Hall in San Francisco, quite possibly one of the readings at which he circulated this pamphlet by hand. The flyer is a black & white negative of the perennially-bearded Ferlinghetti juxtaposed behind an image of the poet lifting both hands in the air on a dock slightly above water. A very psychedelic flyer. Broadside in very fine condition with only slightest rubbing and browning to to edges of front and rear panels; short, faint crease near upper edge of front panel echoing slightly through all panels. Folded into four sections as originally issued with attendant creases when unfolded. Flyer in very fine condition, fragile but virtually mint. Both items stored in clear protective envelope. Very Fine/Very Fine. [Item #2540]
