Santa Barbara, CA: Cadmus Editions, 1980. Limited First Edition. Softcover with Overwraps. Presentation copy inscribed & signed by Clayton Eshleman. A volume of poetry by Clayton Eshleman, the acclaimed poet, translator & educator who has long resided in Michigan. As explained in a postscript note, these poems were written during a visit to the Italian Riviera which inspired a prolific creative output. As noted in the colophon, this edition "...consists of 374 trade copies and 126 numbered and lettered copies signed by the poet..." This copy is among the 100 numbered editions, but where the number would be noted there is hand-written "-presentation copy-" in what appears to be the poet's hand. On the title page, in green ink, Eshleman has hand-written: "For Jan Benda/a strong/embrace/from the granite of/The poet./(signed) Clayton Eshleman/Los Angeles/June 1980." Note the date at time of publication. Benda is a Czech academic whom Eshleman was acquainted with at the time. Below this, at the bottom margin of the title page, Eshleman has hand-written in brackets: "[first copy of this book]" Exquisitely produced with by the Poltroon Press of Berkeley for the venerable Cadmus Editions with illustrated wrappers over cover & spine, & a color illustration tipped in to leaf preceding title page. A very rare & significant Eshleman collectible. In very fine condition with only the slightest wear to edges & corners of overwrap, otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #2581]
