Berkeley, CA: Blue Wind Press, 1980. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed to Ken & Anne Mikolowski by Ted Berrigan. A landmark collection of poems by Ted Berrigan (1934-1983), among the giants of the New York School of poetry & an acclaimed category onto himself with his own inimitable style. First trade softcover edition issued in the spring of 1980. With front cover illustration by Donna Dennis & artworks throughout by noted artist George Schneeman. This is a very special copy- although not among the limited hardcover signed editions released simultaneously with this trade edition, it is hand-inscribed, signed & dated by Berrigan on front blank endpaper near the time of publication: "For Ken & Anne/with love/&/Kisses/(signed)Ted Berrigan/NYC Nov 1981." Ken & Anne Mikolowski are the recipients of this affectionate inscription by the poet. During this period, poet-printer-publisher-professor Ken & his late wife artist & co-publisher Anne operated the legendary Alternative Press in Detroit. The Press published works by Berrigan & many other of the greatest poets of the major schools & beyond. They were close friends with Berrigan, as this inscription indicates. Also present in this copy are two bookmarks produced by the Press, longer & shorter-length versions of the same item with the poem "Truth" by Eileen Miles printed on them; a xerox copy of the front cover of an issue of the literary journal Bombay Gin (New Series Vol. 1 No. 4, Summer 1989) featuring a full-length image of Berrigan; & short slips of paper, one with the word "Signed"; apparently all used as bookmarks that we have left in their places, which the Mikolowskis must have found significant. An outstanding Berrigan collectible with very important associations & provenance. Book in fine condition with only moderate rubbing & wear to front, back covers & spine; faint vertical creasing across spine; one small stain near upper left edge of same; mild bumps & wear along all edges & corners; very light scratching & spotting at all edges of text block. Interior very fine with only short bump-waves to most upper & some lower corners of page leaves. Longer bookmark with curled upper edge & short, closed tear at same where it slightly protrudes beyond top edge, otherwise fine; shorter bookmark very fine with only slight upper edgewear & small bumps at upper corners; xerox copy of journal cover very fine, folded in half lengthwise; small slips with creasing, curling & corner bumps at upper edges esp. "Signed" where it slightly protrudes beyond top edge. Fine. [Item #2705]
