City Lights 1985 Literary Calendar: Long Live Poetry!

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1985. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. A fascinating & delightful production by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books, the iconic Beat-&-Beyond bookseller & publishing imprint in San Francisco. Each day of each month features the birthdays of major literary, musical & cultural figures. Who knew, for example, that William S. Burroughs & Joris-Karl Huysmans were both born on February 5 (of 1914 & 1848 respectively); or that Gregory Corso & Tennessee Williams were both born on March 26 (of 1930 & 1911, mistakenly shown as 1914, respectively)? With great quotations on each month-page, including Ferlinghetti's "Poetry is dead, long live/poetry/With terrible eyes and /buffalo strength." on the March page. Each month is preceded by a full-page photograph with caption, including Jacques, Simone & Pierre Prevert with Andre Breton in Paris, 1925 (February); Ted Hughes & Sylvia Plath in Paris, 1956 (October) & ten others; along with a colored photographic image of Dylan Thomas & his wife Caitlin from 1946 on front cover. A wonderful & informative piece of ephemera, & a desirable City Lights collectible. In near-fine condition with only moderate rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; small creases & wear to edges & corners of same; staples beginning to rust with very minor interior bleeding. Interior very fine except for staple rust noted above; tiny bump-curling of corners of page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #2734]
