No Place: Periphery & The Salient Seedling Press, 1989. First Edition & Association Copy. Sewn Binding in Stiff Wrappers. Signed & Inscribed by Robert Creeley to Ken & Ann Mikolowski, Founders of Detroit's "Alternative Press." (1/180). Initially printed in a run of 230 copies (50 of which were formally signed), this particular edition is one of the 180 unsigned copies but contains a signature from Robert Creeley addressed to Ken & Ann Mikolowski, owners of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press." This is an exceptionally rare Creeley item issued in-part by Kathy Kuehn's The Salient Seedling Press, another of the impeccably spirited small-press companies committed to producing limited edition releases of the finest quality. "A student of, and later assistant to, Walter Hamady at his Perishable Press in Madison, Wisconsin, Kuehn started the Salient Seedling Press in 1978. Her editions, the collaborative work of artists, writers, and the printer are notable for the use of her own handmade papers and her versatility in employing a number of typographical styles. Her workshop instruction includes eight summers teaching letterpress printing to poets in the Summer Writing Program at Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics." (University of Wisconsin-Madison, Online Library). As expected, the handmade paper is of finest craftsmanship and the stiff wrappers are ornate, echoing (the poet's wife) Bobbie Creeley's masterful monographs that often appeared alongside Robert Creeley's work. Contemporary inscription warm and highly-personalized (the collector's dream!), that begins with a Creeley doodle he seems to have adopted later on in his career, but this is the first time we have seen it legibly executed. It is of a handgun-form thumbs-up (see picture) and follows: "for Ken and Ann/(another doodle, this one a heart with an arrow pointing to its center) / Here! / With my love, / Bob / (illegible) / 8/21/89." An incredibly personalized Creeley collectible. Book in very fine condition with only slightest rubbing to front, back covers; one less-than-1cm scuff near top-right corner of front cover, else substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #2754]
