Los Angeles, CA: Siglio Press, 2008. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. "Every page of this book will make you smile or laugh- not with recognition but with startled joy. Joe Brainard took an unchanging icon of the American norm and inserted her into countless fashionable or scandalous contexts, subtly metamorphosing something that seemed eternal into absurdly contemporary forms. He is as funny as only a philosopher can be."(Edmund White, quoted on back cover) A compilation of artworks by Joe Brainard (1942-1994), the great poet-artist associated with the New York School but really a category onto himself. All of the works in this volume are Brainard's variations on Ernie Bushmiller's classic comic character Nancy, by himself & in collaboration with some of his most acclaimed contemporaries & associates including Ted Berrigan, Robert Creeley, Frank O'Hara & his lifelong friend & fellow Tulsa, Oklahoma native Ron Padgett. With essays by Padgett & noted poet Ann Lauterbach. From the library of Ken Mikolowski, poet-publisher-printer-professor who, with his late wife Ann, founded & conducted the legendary Alternative Press in Detroit. The Mikolowskis were personal friends with Brainard & published his works along with those of Creeley, Padgett & many other luminaries. Loosely inserted between front board & front endpaper is a review of this item by Richard Hell, the seminal punk figure & memoirist, removed from an issue of the journal Rain Taxi & folded in half. Stated first edition, hardcover in illustrated boards without dust jacket as issued. A delightful & desirable Brainard collectible with important association & ephemera. In very fine condition, substantially as new inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #2762]
