Stony Brook, NY: Stony Brook Poetics Foundation, 1969. First Printing. Softcover. Signed by Clayton Eshleman & Diane Wakoski. The internationally-recognized San Francisco Renaissance poet Robert Duncan said of Stony Brook: "A Journal where new academics and old bohemians find themselves in one congregation; a vehicle of informed new thought and early key documents of modern poetry; an eclectic intelligence; a ground that is responsive to possibilities: Stony Brook provides the much needed forum of serious and engaged men concerned with what is happening in contemporary poetry." (in-laid subscription card). Stony Brook also counts among its supporters Objectivist poets Carl Rakosi & George Oppen, acclaimed poets Hugh Kenner & Denise Levertov, and founder of the great Black Sparrow Press, John Martin. This is a particularly exceptional issue, featuring immortal bard of Los Angeles Charles Bukowski, poet Robert Creeley, French Pataphysical poet Rene Daumal, Guggenheim Fellow Clayton Eshleman, scholar-poet Hugh Kenner, & the celebrated poet Denise Levertov. As the title infers, the book begins with William Blake's "America: A Prophecy," reprinted with Blake's original accompanying illustrations. These are printed on a dark greenish-yellow paper that differs from the white pages of the rest of the issue. Signed at title page of issue in top right-hand corner by Clayton Eshleman in full. Also signed by Diane Wakoski in full with doodle/flourish next to the title of her first contribution in this issue. A stellar contribution to an already well-stocked issue of the venerable journal. Also includes original subscription card/flyer with accompanying envelope. Book in good condition with uniform slight rubbing throughout front, back covers; bump to top right-hand corner of front cover; slight spotting near bottom fine-edge of same; scattered slight spotting, scuffs & nicks to back cover; slight chipping to bottom right-hand corner of same. Very Good. [Item #2773]
