Distance (Broadside Poems 6)

Lawrence, KS: Terence Williams, 1964. First Printing. Single Sheet. Signed by Robert Creeley. (1/500 unnumbered copies). Drawings by Bobbie Creeley, the poet's wife & an acclaimed artist in her own right. This beautiful single-sheet broadside contains the title poem, "Distance" by Robert Creeley. "Distance" is classic Creeley--sparse, emotive, intimate & pervasive. Creeley's "you" in his poems becomes so personal that it becomes the reader's "you." His persuasion is so confidential, his work can only be understood by applying what William S. Burroughs said of Jack Kerouac's work to Creeley's: "The writer has been there or he couldn't write about it. And going there he risks being gored." (William S. Burroughs, 1982, Naropa University Lecture on Jack Kerouac). Creeley is eager to take this risk, and invites his readers to be his confidant. Robert Creeley's signature at bottom left of poem-facing side in black ink, and by our judgment is visibly an early signature, as we have curated many signed Creeley items. His later signatures, in contour & execution, differ in size and solemnity (as in, if accompanying doodles are present as we have often seen in association copies, etc.) Broadside in very fine condition, with minute age-toning of pages at all fine-edges; faintest crease-indentation near top left fine-edge of sheet; similar faint crease-indentation when held in proper light near upper right-hand corner of front cover; three small chips/minute tears on left fine-edge of poem-facing side below center-middle. The largest of which is 1/2 cm, the others even smaller (see photograph). Very Fine. [Item #2776]
