A Concert of String Quartets by Philip Glass In Memory of Brian Buczak

n/p: Unknown, 1989. First Edition. Cassette Tape in Case. Signed by Philip Glass on Side 2 label. A cassette with three string quartets by the canonical contemporary composer Philip Glass, who turns 80 years young as we write! The compositions were String Quartets "No. 2(1983- Company)," "No. 3 (1985- Mishima)" & "No. 4 (1989- Buczak)," were performed by L'Ensemble on July 4, 1989, & recorded here. The latter piece had its World Premiere at this concert, & is dedicated along with the whole event to Brian Buczak (1954-1987), a noted artist whose life was cut short by AIDS at age 33. On the Side 2 label, where No. 4 is located, Glass has hand-signed his name across the upper printed information, boldly & with an emphatic underlining flourish. Both the cassette & case consist of clear, plain plastic with simple white labels & no reference to any publisher or the location of the concert. The previous owner & recipient of the signature is Ken Mikolowski, who with his late wife Ann was the founder & proprietor of the legendary Alternative Press, first in Detroit & later in Grindstone City & Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Press published works by many primary poets of the Beat Generation, Black Mountain & New York Schools, including Allen Ginsberg, who famously collaborated with Glass. A significant collectible with a particularly fine example of the composer's hand-signature. Cassette in very fine condition with only very slight toning & rubbing to labels. It appears to be intact & playable on this obsolete media, we have not played it. It is suggested that purchaser transfer to another media or simply leave it alone, its main value being as a signed artifact. Case in very fine condition with only very slight scratching & rubbing. Very Fine. [Item #2866]
