New York, NY: Grove Press/ Evergreen Black Cat, 1967; 1973. Third Softcover Printing; First Softcover Printing. Softcover. Hand-signed & dated by William S. Burroughs. Two editions of the first issued novel in William S. Burroughs' cut-up trilogy, followed by The Ticket that Exploded & Nova Express: (1) First softcover edition, third printing. According to Maynard & Miles, approximately 25,000 copies of the first softcover edition were published during March of 1967. This was followed by a second printing of 24,052 copies the next month; & two more printings of only 5,000 copies each in July of 1973 & May of 1974 (A5c, pgs. 26-27). This copy is from the third printing of 1973. WSB has hand-signed & dated on the title page: "(Signed) William S. Burroughs/January 25, 1994." Obtained from Jim McCrary, a poet & educator who was a friend & associate of WSB during his later years in Lawrence, Kansas; a member of Burroughs Communications led by James Grauerholz. Though not specifically inscribed to McCrary, it was signed for him in person by WSB. (2) First softcover edition, first printing as stated on title page. With all points in M&M except "A two-leaf (four-page) card advertisement for Evergreen Review...inserted between pp. 92 and 93," which appears to have been removed. Also from the library of McCrary. Two collectible versions of the WSB classic, both with the second of four different versions of text over the years, with significant association & provenance. (1) in very fine condition with only mild rubbing, creasing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; area of deeper, longer scratches at & near lower right corner of front cover (quite possibly production flaws as issued); tiny bumps & wear at all thin edges & corners; very light browning, scratching & spotting at edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only moderate browning esp. at blank margins & edges of page leaves; decreasing impressions of front cover scratches noted above through about first ten page leaves; tiny bumps at lower corners of some page leaves. (2) in fair condition with moderate-to-significant rubbing, soiling, scratching & creasing of front, back covers & spine; mild-to-moderate wear & bumps to all edges & corners esp. at spine; clear tape affixed to small area of lower front, back covers & spine; wear, spotting, smudging & fading of orange dye at edges of text block. Interior good-near fine with moderate browning esp. at blank margins & edges of page leaves; small bumps & waves at corners of page leaves slightly rounded likely as issued; missing two-leaf advertisement as noted above.
