Cherry Valley, NY: Cherry Valley Editions, 1989. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by illustrator S. Clay Wilson to Jim McCrary. An important later work by the supreme Beat-&-Beyond innovative literary prophet William S. Burroughs. Featuring seven classic short pieces (or "routines") including "The Thanksgiving Prayer," which was delightfully recited & recorded by WSB as well-known to his aficionados. This is the first trade softcover edition (see Shoaf, 72b, pg. 58; Schottlaender, A65, pg. 20) published by Cherry Valley Editions, the imprint of the legendary Charles Plymell & his wife, Pamela Beach Plymell. With front cover art by Don Williams; back cover portrait of WSB by Mary Beach (Pamela's mother & Claude Pelieu's wife); & two quintessentially Burroughsian interior illustrations by S. Clay Wilson, whom WSB preferred as a kindred spirit & who was among the iconic artists of the Zap underground comix classics, the first of which was famously printed by Charles Plymell. This copy is inscribed & signed in the year of publication by Wilson on the title page as follows: "To my ol' River/ City Rat Bro-/ McCrary./ (signed) S. Clay Wilson./ .1989." "McCrary" is Jim McCrary, a poet & educator who resides in Lawrence, Kansas & was a close friend & associate of WSB there during his later years. "River City" is a local reference to Lawrence, where the historic "River City Reunion" took place in 1987, in which both McCrary & Wilson participated. Also, there is McCrary's writing in pencil concerning an event in Berkeley, California including a street map, on rear blank endpaper. A most desirable version of this WSB canonical collectible, with rich association & provenance. In fair-to-good condition but quite intact, which we deem acceptable as handled by these two important figures (& most probably by WSB himself at some point): Moderate rubbing, scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & tiny bumps at all edges & corners of same; vertical crease through middle of front cover; echo of same through page leaves & back cover; light spotting to upper edge of text block. Interior fine except for echoes of crease noted above; residue of thick black ink used for inscription-signature onto inside back cover; very slight smudging of ink at last two letters of the word "Rat" in inscription. Fair/ Good. [Item #2911]
