New Young German Poets (Edited by Jerome Rothenberg)

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1959. First Edition, Second Printing. Softcover. "IS THERE AN AVANT GARDE IN GERMAN POETRY TODAY and, if so, with what is it concerned and toward what is it advancing? This volume is an attempt to answer such questions. JEROME ROTHENBERG, its editor and translator...spent a year and a half with the 'peacetime' Army in Mainz, living with his wife 'in a postwar office building converted to a rooming house for East German refugees, transients, GI lovenests, etc.' He has published translations from German, Spanish, and Japanese, and has a book of poems in preparation for the Hawk's Well Press." (from back cover). This rare & unique compilation of translations by Jerome Rothenberg was released by City Lights Books in 1959, the eleventh book in the now world-renown Pocket Poets series and the third book of translations published in the series. At the same time he was assembling this manuscript, Rothenberg was beginning his forays into publishing through putting together the first issue of "Poems from the Floating World," one of the earliest exemplars of the Mimeograph Revolution. Rothenberg has since gone on to pioneer over seventy publication and to be lauded effusively by his fellow poets, with Ed Sanders' praise of Rothenberg's "Poland 1931" in Sanders' classic "Investigative Poetry" being a prime example of this. Book in fine condition with moderate rubbing to front, back covers; significant spotting, foxing to white background of front cover; drip mark near upper right-hand corner of front cover; minute shelf-wear throughout. Fine. [Item #2922]
