New York, NY: Full Court Press, 1978. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. Released in 1978 by Ron Padgett and Anne Waldman's Full Court Press, this publication assembles a rarely surveyed & highly experimental aspect of O'Hara's oeuvre; his plays. As Joseph LeSeur, the dedicatee of "Lunch Poems" writes in his introduction, Frank once made the comment that "You call it something--i.e. a play--and everyone will accept it as such." Yet the highly experimental nature of O'Hara's plays, with set directions calling for "...waves breaking like bees on the shelf of Armorica, while the scent of burning almond leaves fills the nippled sky." LeSeur goes on to surmise, "Maybe what Kenneth Koch said to me some years ago is more to the point. He described Frank's plays--and his own, no doubt--as 'literary comments'...These plays, then, might be regarded as dadaistic, as part of the surrealist tradition, or the verbal equivalent of aleatory music." LeSeur and Koch's estimations are as astute as you'd expect them to be, given that they were such close and irreplaceable friends to O'Hara during his most important and integral working years. From the collection of Ken & Ann Mikolowski, founders of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press," publishers & friends of many "Beat Generation/Black Mountain/New York School" authors. Book in fine condition with only minor rubbing, shelf-wear, and minute soiling to front, back covers; slight chipping nearest top left-hand corner of front cover. Fine. [Item #2934]
