Bolinas, CA: Grey Fox Press, 1977. First Trade Edition. Softcover. First published by Don Allen's Grey Fox Press in 1977, "Poems Retrieved" provided the answer to the question asked of Allen by poet Edwin Denby, "When will we have the complete poems of Frank O'Hara?" This volume, in contrast to the volume more recently published which is a total collected works, filled a portion of the gap that existed in what had been published of O'Hara. Denby, a poet who was a contemporary of O'Hara and a New York presence during O'Hara's life there, knew--like most of O'Hara's friends--how incredibly prolific and workman-like he could be with his literary output. This volume provided an early answer to that question, and has since been reprinted a number of times--yet this is the first trade edition as published by celebrated & influential editor Don Allen's "Grey Fox Press," and as such is the earliest of those volumes to have appeared. From the collection of Ken & Ann Mikolowski, founders of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press," publishers & friends of many "Beat Generation/Black Mountain/New York School" authors. Book in very fine condition with only slight rubbing to front, back covers; minute shelf-wear throughout; reading crease from the Mikolowskis' use of the book at spine-edge of front cover. Fine.
