Moving Right Along

Calais, VT: Z Press, 1980. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. (1/1000 Unsigned & Unnumbered Copies). "Moving Right Along" is almost an unofficial "Selected Poems of Kenward Elmslie 1970-1980," because it assembles a lot of previously published work that he executed in the 1970s, during which Elmslie was explosively prolific. Classics collected here are his experimental "Alphabet Work," Communications Equipment," and three scenes reprinted from "City Junket." There are also stunning, then-newer pieces in the collection, which is why it did not received the "selected" moniker. Cover art by Joe Brainard. Signed by Kenward Elmslie and given by the poet to Ken & Ann Mikolowski, founders of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press," publishers & friends of many "Beat Generation/Black Mountain/New York School" authors. Signature reads: "For by 1C / All best, / Kenward Elmslie / "I Remember my favorite set of stamps." The signature is made even more interesting by Elmslie's initial miswriting and crossing out part of his inscription to complete the above line--and one must wonder whether his inscription's allusion to a set of "stamps" bears any relation to the legendary Postcard Project of the Alternative Press. Book in fine condition with minor rubbing to front, back covers; slight shelf-wear throughout. Fine. [Item #2944]
