Beat Scene No. 84 (Winter 2016)
Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2016. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Beat Scene Issue No. 84 begins with an incredibly scholastic article from Jaap Vanderbent that focuses on John Clellon Holmes' relationship with "the classics," but chronicles and comments on many other figures of Beat pedigree (Ed Sanders, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs & others) and their work's relation to classical mythology. Following that is an excellent article from David Holzer entitled "Kerouac and Burroughs: Taping Truth and Reality" but actually encompasses a thorough biography of the Beats' discovery and utilization of tape recording, and goes in-depth on how this process affected Kerouac's "Visions of Cody." He launches heavily into Burroughs storied experiments and endeavors with tape recording, of which it is a Beat enthusiast's delight to actually discover more about. Also included is is a short 1966 interview of Allen Ginsberg, a feature on Beat-&-Beyond photographer Harry Redl, an incredible response to Paul Blackburn's 1963 essay "On the State of the Secret Location," or on the state of the Mimeograph Revolution in 1963, and following that is Blackburn's original essay. These nuggets and more are to be found within Beat Scene No. 84, an issue that could expand the knowledge of even the most olympian of Beat scholars, and one sure to enhance our understanding of the Beat Generation when encountered by ANY reader. Magazine in fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear; bump-corner at bottom right-hand corner of front over; four small bump-creases to spine-edge (see photo). Fine. [Item #2951]
