Danger on Peaks with: Postcard-Flyer for a Celebration of Karl Pohrt

Washington DC: Shoemaker & Hoard, 2004. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Gary Snyder to Ken Mikolowski, Co-Founder of Detroit's Visionary Alternative Press. Gary Snyder's "Danger on Peaks" was published by Jack Shoemaker's Shoemaker & Hoard publishing company in 2004. Inside the book we found a postcard-flyer for a reading-celebration of Karl Pohrt; legendary Ann Arborite, University of Michigan adjunct professor, and onetime proprietor of Ann Arbor's storied Shaman Drum Bookshop, where many Beat-&-Beyond luminaries including Allen Ginsberg often visited and gave readings. Pohrt was mentor to our Founder, Arthur S. Nusbaum, and Gary Snyder was among the last of Pohrt's visitors near the end of his life. The circle of association created by this postcard-flyer in this book--involving Ken Mikolowski, former owner of this book, close friend and publisher of Snyder, friend of Pohrt, and founder of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press;" Snyder & Pohrt's friendship, and Pohrt's invaluable assistance in launching Third Mind Books--all combine to make this a truly special item. Such association emblemizes the true sense of community and friendship that permeated Beat literary culture and allowed the writers, publishers, booksellers and enthusiasts alike to cultivate good society amongst themselves that continues to nourish the Beat-&-Beyond community. The book also includes an original bookmark from the Shaman Drum Bookshop, left precisely in the place it was put by Ken Mikolowski when he was reading this title. Signed by Gary Snyder to Ken Mikolowski. Signature in thin black felt pen ink reads: "Gary Snyder / For Ken -- / Ann Arbor / 7 III / 08." Book in very fine condition, virtually immaculate. Dust jacket in fine condition with only slight rubbing, scuffs to front, back covers, including what looks to be marks from being used as a writing surface by Mikolowski on front cover; slight vertical indentation-creases appear on front, back covers due to Ken's tight placement of this title within his stocked Snyder shelves. Very Fine / fine. [Item #2968]
