New York, NY: New Directions, 1969. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. Signed by Gary Snyder. From the Collection of Ken Mikolowski, Co-Founder of Detroit's Visionary Alternative Press. Subtitled as "Technical Notes & Queries / To Fellow Dharma Revolutionaries," "Earth House Hold" is a collection of prose jottings and poetic-philosophical musings on a vast array of subject matter, ranging from the literary to the cultural, the anthropological to the ecological. Snyder has a few titles that strongly echo Allen Ginsberg's "Indian Journals," and this is certainly one of those titles. It is in many ways a poet's book of prose--for it is a record of Snyder's acute sense of what Ginsberg referred to as "grounding" in poetics--of being able to write about what one sees because one is not distracted by "thunderstorms of mind" causing one to miss the importance or peculiarity of what is in front of one. In this manner and many others, it certainly is a tome addressed to and made for "Fellow Dharma Revolutionaries." Signed by Gary Snyder. Signature in black felt pen ink reads: "Gary Snyder." From the collection of Ken Mikolowski, co-founder of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press" and close friend and publisher of Gary Snyder. Inside the book we found one of the classic, pithy letterpress bookmarks printed and distributed by Ken & his late wife and collaborator, Ann, in support of their press. This particular bookmark is credited to "Spanky," either an alias for a popular writer or an unknown friend of Ken & Ann's. Book in fine condition with rubbing to front, back covers; shelf-wear throughout esp. at all fine-edges; minor bumps to bottom right-hand corner of front cover; coffee stain to bottom fine-edge of Alternative Press bookmark incurred by the Mikolowskis that affects the 2 pages on either side surrounding the bookmark; scattered nicks and creases to back cover at varying points (see photographs). Bookmark in near fine condition with bumps, a few scattered creases and a coffee stain near bottom fine-edge. Where this type of use would normally denote unacceptability, because it was actually read by the esteemed University of Michigan professor and underground publisher Ken Mikolowski, we feel in this case it enhances the provenance of the item. The Mikolowski's likely read it and discussed the book at length with Snyder on one of his many visits to Ann Arbor to spend time with Ken & Ann and conduct select readings & appearances. Fine.
